2nd Wind - the Band

2nd Wind is the primary musical project of Houston-based vocalist and bassist "Hollywood" Steve Rangel. Steve is an accomplished performer who honed his craft as a former member of such prominent area bands as Mean Gene Kelton And The Diehards, Monica Marie and The Blues Cruizers, and Matt Leddy and The Meatcutters.

2nd Wind is a tight, professional, 3-piece unit that performs a commercial mix of blues, classic rock, oldies and R & B. Formed in late 1997, the band has established a respectable following in Houston and surrounding areas.

The band is known for their renditions of hits from classic 60s artists such as Chuck Berry, The Beatles, and Elvis Presley, as well as the blues of B.B. King and Stevie Ray Vaughn. They also perform a dynamic mix of classic rock from Bob Seger, Jimmy Buffet, and Creedence Clearwater Revival, among others. Rounding out their repertoire with selected country and dance favorites, 2nd Wind is an ideal group for any and all live music needs.

The band's current line-up includes guitarist Starr Jernigan and drummer "Big" Ed Martinson. Both are serious professionals with over 30 years of experience in the live music business.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Steve got his first bass guitar at age 14. He would soon find himself at ground zero for the Hollywood hard rock craze of the 80s. He would eventually come to perform at The Troubadour, The Whiskey, The Roxy, Gazzari's, and other legendary clubs of the era. It is an influence that is evident in his stage persona and playing style to this day.

He followed a growing interest in blues music all the way to Austin, Texas. It was here that he was quickly dubbed "Hollywood" by the local musicians. He performed regularly in the "Live Music Capital Of The World" until relocating to Houston in 1997. He immediately formed 2nd Wind. This would become his primary musical project, though he would eventually make the time to join 2 of Houston's most well established blues bands, Mean Gene Kelton and The Die-Hards and Matt Leddy and The Meatcutters.

Steve is also privileged to have shared the stage at various times with Mark May, Texas Johnny Brown, The Mighty Orq, Tony Vega, Sandy Hickey, and Monica Marie.

Drums
Drums: "Big" Ed Martinson

Born and raised in the Montrose area of Houston, TX, Ed Martinson is the drummer and musical foundation of 2nd Wind. Growing up in a musical household, Ed's earliest influence was classical music. Early experiments with piano lessons failed to inspire him, but his life was changed forever when he saw The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show.

He lobbied his parents for drums, and it paid off when he got his first set at age 16. By the age of 19, he was working regularly with Houston-area bands. Citing legendary rock drummers Charlie Watts, John Bonham and Joey Kramer has primary influences, "Big" Ed refined his style on stage with a succession of local bands including Finz, which opened for early '80s standouts the Busboys.

Remaining faithful to his earliest influences, "Big" Ed brings a Ringo-style rock steady approach to his work -- a perfect musical fit for 2nd Wind.

Guitar
Guitar: Starr Jernigan

An accomplished and versatile musician, Starr Jernigan is the newest addition to 2nd Wind. She hails from Alvin, Tx, and brings a lifetime of experience to her role as lead guitarist. Starr comes from a musical family and her earliest memories are of the music they created together. Relatives gathered for weekend jam sessions that became Starr’s first influences.

She would go on to be inspired by such artists as the Beatles, The Grateful Dead, Elton John, and Bob Dylan. Her first formal training was on the clarinet in her school band, but by age 11 she was teaching herself guitar. She formed her first band at the age of 16 and soon began playing professionally in the Houston area. She would go on to tour extensively through the Midwest, Northwest, and southern states with numerous country and country/rock acts.

Upon her return to Texas in the year 2000, Starr worked regularly with a succession of local acts, both cover and original, including the Rockaholics, JuJu Eyeball, and Gypsy Train. Starr Jernigan is a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, harmonica, & vocals) whose versatility gives 2nd Wind an added dimension the band has never known.
